About the Exhibition - Press Release

Cirque de Médecine
The 2002 PaperVeins Museum of Art Biennial Exhibition

September 14 - October 19, 2002
Opening Reception is September 14th, 5-7pm

The HERE Art Center and the PaperVeins Museum of Art is proud to present Cirque de Médecine, a fierce and fastidious look into the contemporary medical world by 12 diverse artists. This one-of-a-kind exhibition — with award-winning interactive media installations, videos, photographs, sculptures, and paintings — is divided into three main sections:

"Sacre bleu"

SUPER NANOBOTS. Peer into digital master Mike Sachs' magnificent modern day flea circus and see his amazing nanobots lift glucose molecules and tame some of the nastiest viruses known to man!

TALKING TRANSGENIC MOUSE. Virgil Wong's neuro-interfaced transgenic mouse is ready to chat with you. Do you dare challenge this remarkable creature to a game of cheese maze?

THE FIRST MALE PREGNANCY. Amid cries of joy (and anguish) around the world, parents Lee Mingwei and Virgil Wong finally cross the final gender barrier and make it possible for men to have babies. POP! The First Human Male Pregnancy was last seen barefoot and pregnant at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei.

"Alley-oop"

BRAZILIAN ANATOMY. Digital luminary Nando Costa exhibits one of his trademark videos, which incorporates dynamic footage from The Visible Human Project with thrilling typographic design and imagery.

CADAVER STUDIES. Meryl Levin's Anatomy of Anatomy series depicts a group of medical students during their initial dissection of cadavers in a gross anatomy class and includes excerpts from the journals they kept during the course.

FLESH AND INJURY PAINTINGS. Kevin Klein's hyper-real paintings of cuts, bruises, scars, and surgeries reveal in close-up the frailty and resilience of human flesh.

BATTLING CANCER. CB Cooke's charlie & cb is an electronic good-bye through the eyes of a son.

GASP. Eric Wielosinski's interactive video installation depicts children who are frantically gasping for air. When the viewer approaches the image, a child holds his breath until the viewer leaves. Together, the children form a wall of pensive sound. Individually, they react to the viewer's presence.

NAKED MAN IN PLASTIC, and MORE. Jonathan Schipper's Invisible Jet places his naked body into a rigid plastic enclosure.

FILMS — WOUNDED, DISSECT, and MORE. Australian super artist Tina Gonsalves exhibits a selection of animations, videos, and digital prints.

"Ooo-la-la"

DREAMS ON-SCREEN. Step right up and gaze into your own mind. Andrea Kleine's The Occluding Tent reveals your unconscious so you can watch your dreams in close-up! This new technology turns your innermost thoughts into moving images — your own private little movie of desire.

FUN-HOUSE MIRROR PHOTOGRAPHY. Marcus Pinto uses himself and others as subjects of dysmorphic portraiture. His technique is influenced by André Kertész's 1933 photographs, which depicted funhouse mirror reflections of the female nude.

The 2002 PaperVeins Biennial was curated by 2001 NEA grant recipient Virgil Wong — who also screened his film at this year's Sundance Film Festival and has exhibited work in museums, galleries, and theaters around the world. Virgil also spent a year drawing and dissecting cadavers at the University of Rome Medical School, and he currently heads the Web Design and Development Team for Weill Medical College of Cornell University and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The PaperVeins Museum of Art has produced almost a decade of outstanding exhibitions and arts programming both online and in various New York City galleries.
